James Gunn confirmed that a third installment in the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise will happen in a recent interview, what is not confirmed, however, is his participation in it.
In an interview with Complex that has been published this week, James Gunn talked about his new film The Belko Experiment and once his involvement in a possible third movie in Guardians of the Galaxy was questioned, his answer was direct:
"There will be a Guardians 3, that's for sure. We're trying to figure it out. I'm trying to figure out what I want to do really, that's all it is. I got to figure out where I want to be, what I want to spend the next three years of my life doing. You know, I'm going to make another big movie; is it the Guardians or something else? I'm just going to figure it out over the next couple of weeks."
Gunn finished production on the first sequel in the series last year and currently has his hands full promoting his horror movie, The Belko Experiment. Gunn is the director of the first Guardians installment and often spoke of it enthusiastically on social media. He stated that while his involvement in the third installment is uncertain, he is working along with the Russo brothers to ascertain that the appearance of the Guardians in Avengers: Infinity is sensical
“I gave [the Russo brothers] tons of advice on how to direct the actors, talked to them a lot during the shooting, and talked to the actors a lot during the shooting to make sure that the Guardians are staying authentic.”
Kevin Feige, Marvel CEO, made it clear in 2016 that although what is on the feature-film timetable after 2020 hasn't been thought of yet, Guardians is prioritized without doubt. The return of the five major actors in the third film is uncertain.
A lot of time still remains if Marvel desires to keeo Gunn. As for now, we may all just indulge in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 upon its release on May 5, 2017.
